A data layer is a JavaScript object that acts as a standardized intermediary between your website and your tag management system, such as Google Tag Manager (GTM).

When a user interacts with your site—perhaps by clicking a 'Buy Now' button, viewing a product, or signing up for a newsletter—the website pushes specific information about that event into the data layer. This information is then captured by your tag manager and sent to your analytics platforms. Without a data layer, tag managers are forced to 'scrape' the DOM (Document Object Model) of your website. DOM scraping is notoriously fragile; if a developer changes a CSS class name or moves an HTML element, your tracking breaks instantly. By using a data layer, you decouple your tracking from the visual structure of your site, ensuring that your analytics remain robust even during major site redesigns.
